Whilst studying at University of Minnesota in 1958, Spider John Koerner became involved in the burgeoning folk scene. During this time he met Dave Ray and Tony Glover and some time later the trio collaborated and released the album Blues, Rags and Hollers under the name Koerner, Ray and Glover.

In 1965 Koerner recorded his first solo album, Spider Blues and in 1967 he collaborated with Willie Murphy to release Running, Jumping, Standing Still

Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s Koerner released many more albums and collaborated with many top musicians, continuing to also work with Dave Ray, Tony Glover and Willie Murphy. Venturing into film making, Koerner produced The Secret of Sleep, a commentary on how people were feeling in the 60s.

An early influence on Bob Dylan and mentioned in his autobiography; Koerner and Dave Ray contributed on the track Delia to the Redhouse tribute recording A Nod to Bob, which was released in 2001 for Dylan’s 60th Birthday.
